Remember panic buying?
During Covid, many Singaporeans scrambled to buy daily necessities from supermarkets upon hearing a lockdown would be put in place. With this came much apprehension as to whether there would be sufficient resources for everyone, with Malaysia having closed their border. The government ensured citizens that there would be sufficient food reserves to last us through the lockdown. This is one of the ways that the government ensures that we have food security. Here are some tips to play your part in food sustainability!

1. Grow your own produce!
You can help to contribute to food sustainability by growing your own produce. This just means that you grow edible plants in your home and consume them! By doing so, you are able to control the quality of your food and also help greatly reduce your food miles! Besides that, you can enjoy growing plants as a hobby! :)
2. Support local farms!
In order to make sure that Singapore is food sustainable, we need to make sure that we do not solely rely on foreign imports, meaning that we have to produce some of the food we consume. One of the ways the government does this is by providing grants to local farms. Similarly, we can support local farms by purchasing produce with the SG produce logo. Doing so will help to support local farms in continuing to contribute to SG’s food security! On top of that, you will also be able to cut down your food miles and carbon footprint.
